“Atheism is a strange thing. Even the devils never fell into that vice.” -C. H. Spurgeon
I don’t believe in atheism.
I don’t believe people, when they say they don’t believe in God.
I don’t believe God is a mystery that cannot be known. He’s real, He’s alive, and all are responsible to know Him.
Of course I realize people claim to be atheists; it seems to be somewhat popular these days. Atheists say they don’t believe in God or a god.
For today’s discussion I’d like to say that nobody really believes what they say because the Holy Scriptures contradict them. I realize this is a circular argument in their eyes but for me the argument ends there, it’s just that simple.
A so-called atheist might say, “you can’t prove there’s a god” and since I’ve come to this conclusion, I don’t believe it, or we can’t see God so we don’t believe it.
God has revealed himself to mankind and just because we say we don’t believe it doesn’t make it so.
Romans 1:19-23 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Pressing to be wise, they became fools and changed the glory of the in corruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds, and four-footed animals and creeping things.
Man is without excuse. God has revealed Himself through nature.
Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…
Man is without excuse. God has revealed Himself through His Son.
Luke 1:1-4 Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and minister of the word delivered them to us. It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainly of those things in which you were instructed.
Man is without excuse. God has revealed Himself through His Word.
Opponents of God are free to believe or not believe as they wish but they must know that won’t release them from accountability. Every human in all of history will stand before God and give account of their life. Nothing will be left hidden. Every sin you’ve ever committed will be brought before the Just Judge and a verdict will be rendered.
You might say well my sin isn’t that bad, or I’m a relatively good person compared to that guy….
You need to compare your life to the life of Christ and see how you measure up to His standard. Perfection is the measuring stick by which you will be judged. Every thought, word and deed for the entirety of your life must be perfect.
You may not like this, you may not believe this and you may not accept this as truth, but that won’t change it.
You can laugh, you can scoff, you can ridicule but what you can’t do is escape it. I must warn you today not to take that chance.
Ezekiel 3:17-19 “Son of man. I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel: therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Yet, if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.”
So why are there people that call themselves atheists? Again the answer is simple.
No accountability.
If they say they don’t believe what the Bible says, they don’t have to give account for their sin. They can live guilt free and never have to answer for how they lived their life.
Turn to Christ, see Him as the only One that can save and cast your cares upon Him. Matthew 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock…

There’s something I just can’t see about this argument:
The Gospel is good news. If it is true, there is a free gift of salvation, available to anyone who asks. Yes, people have to be accountable for their sin, but Jesus has dealt with it, guaranteeing eternal freedom for all who believe.
You’re saying that rather than accept this simple free gift, people would rather bury their head in the sand, deny the simple truth that they already know, just to avoid admitting they’re sinners?
You’re basically accusing everyone who is not a believer of being proud to the point of idiocy.
Jonny,
I’m so glad you commented. I sincerely appreciate feedback, especially from a new visitor.
Let’s examine what we agree on. I completely agree the Gospel is good news. I agree that there is a free gift of salvation. I agree the call goes out to all people and that all are accountable for their sin. I agree Jesus is a propitiation for sinners and has guaranteed salvation for all who believe.
So it seems we agree on almost everything.
Yes, I am saying most people will not accept the gift of salvation. I didn’t come up with that idea on my own. Jesus said it. Jesus said it repeatedly.
I’m not accusing anyone of anything. I’m attempting to get people to think why they believe what they believe. Or don’t believe.
I agree with you again that when people don’t believe they are proud and to not believe is idiocy. This is not a personal attack on anyone. I believe in the inspired Word of God being the only truth which I have an authority to stand upon and I can’t cover every possibility in one post.
Paul tells us if the resurrection is not real we are to be pitied 1 Cor 15:29-34, and so my preaching is in vain.
My job as a preacher of the Word of God is call the unrighteous to repentance. To show them they are incapable in their own righteousness of saving themselves. They must turn to the cross and see their sin as God sees it. To know that Christ can save them, but they must turn to Him for that salvation.
I hope we agree on that.
Kevin
Which god are you talking about? There have been so many, and so many of them have “holy scriptures” that their followers sincerely believe prove their existence.
The Qu’ran that shows that Allah is the True god, as revealed by his Prophet?
The Bhagavhad Gita that tells you the Truth about Krishna?
The Egyptian Book of the Dead that is hard evidence that your heart will be judged by Osiris? Millions of people believed this was the Truth for thousands of years.
The Gospel of the FSM, as revealed by the Prophet Bobby (pbuH)? It’s True, because it says that it is.
The christian bible, a compliation of various books by at least 40 writers?
The Book of Mormon as given to Joe Smith by an angel?
No matter how much you quote a book at me, it won’t make any difference until you show that your book is better and “Truer” than all those others out there. As far as I can see, your book is one among many. And your god is just one among all the other fictional gods that man has invented. I don’t believe any of those gods are real, including yours.
Ubi,
thank you for commenting. I’m thankful for an opportunity to visit with you.
As I’m sure you know I’m referring to the One True God of the Christian Bible.
I realize this is foolishness to you and we certainly don’t need to attempt to persuade one another into a different opinion about what we hold dear.
I want you to consider that of all the religious systems you’ve pointed out in your comment all of them but one is dependent upon human accomplishment.
Jesus Christ came to earth and lived a perfect, sinless life, went to the cross and endured the punishment and the wrath of the Father so those who would believe in Him could be justified before God.
In Biblical Christianity, Jesus Christ accomplished so I wouldn’t have to.
I’d like to ask you one question and you certainly don’t need to respond.
“If” Jesus Christ is who He said He was and “if” heaven is a real place will you go there when you die?
I’d like you to consider this very important question, because we will all die someday and how can you be certain of your eternal destiny.
Have you ever broken any of the Ten Commandments? This is the standard by which we will be judged and you can’t keep this standard. But you don’t have to.
I’d encourage you to open God’s Word and learn about Jesus Christ.
Kevin
Everybody thinks their god is the “One True God”. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk8EANdpAj0
Kevin, I’m not unfamiliar with your book. I grew up protestant, was one of those totally involved youth group kids, retreats, conferences, soloist with the choir, volunteered with VBS every summer, the works. If the indoctrination should have worked on anybody, it ought to have worked on me. And they said to “read the bible”. So I did, cover to cover straight through. Twice, in two different translations, just to be sure. And I realized that it was not “god’s word”, it was a bunch of different stuff written by primitive human men with their own agendas. And that parts of it didn’t match up with other parts. That it had been edited and copied and re-edited and re-copied so many times that we have no way of knowing what the original actually said. The original manuscripts have not survived, either, which should have been easy for god to arrange, seeing as he supposedly poofed a whole universe into being. And if the message of Jesus was the most important communication from god, ever, why didn’t Jesus write it down himself? Why does it even need translating? Couldn’t god give it to us in a form that everybody could magically read?
Ten commandments? How about this version, which is also in your book as the set of commandments chisled on the stone tablets Moses had to make to replace the ones he broke: EXODUS 34:12-27 (Look this up.)
I’m pretty sure I have not seethed a goat in it’s mother’s milk or made any molten idols. Have you offered the firstborn of your flock or celebrated the Festival of Weeks? Why would these arbitrary rules from an ancient tribe be more relevant to us today than a simple “Be honest and faithful with your fellow humans, and try really really hard not to kill anybody” (George Carlin’s condensed version.)
If Mohammed was who he said he was, then all you Christians are in big trouble! 🙂
I don’t usually post on Christian blogs, I usually leave you to yourselves. But you were posting that you know what atheists are thinking better than we do ourselves, because your book tells you. Well, your book doesn’t tell you what I am thinking. The way to find out what we actually think is to ASK US.
Ubi,
I’m so thankful that we can have a respectful conversation about our beliefs.
I promise to watch your video if you’ll watch mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPNraxxxRO8
I’d like to know if you believe at the time of your growing up in a church you think you were converted to Christianity. Do you believe you walked away from the faith, or could it be you were never truly converted?
Going to youth group and sitting inside the walls of a church building no more saves a person than me convincing myself I’m the man on the moon. The gospel saves. Christ’s work on the cross is what saves.
Biblical conversion is a changing of the heart. It changed me from a lying, thieving, blasphemer, a man that hated God. I’ve seen my sin for what it is to God which is grotesque. In the same way you believe that being honest and faithful to your fellow humans is a good thing, and I do too, God holds us to a much higher standard.
As sinful humans who have rebelled against God none are able to keep this standard. In His love and mercy He has provided a way out of this dilemma.
What it really comes down to is a refusal to acknowledge God and make yourself your own god so you actually have made yourself idols. You serve something whether you want to believe that or not.
If you don’t believe you are a sinner needing God’s mercy then there is nothing that can be done for you. If you say you’ve never sinned then the Bible says you are a liar. If you are not perfect you will be condemned and the most loving thing I can possibly say to someone is this, even though I’m sure you won’t think that’s very loving.
Let’s consider one more analogy. If you had a child playing on a train tracks and I just watched the train hit this child and I didn’t scream at the top of my lungs to get out of the way you’d think I was cruel and heartless and I’d probably be arrested, which I should be.
If Darwin was correct, which by the way I assume you believe his book, we’re all going to be dust when I we die. If the Bible is correct you’ve got a problem to consider.
I’m not too worried about Mohammed being who he said he was, because he’s dead. Jesus Christ is alive and He is worth putting all my hope in.
Kevin
Ubi,
I understand your frustration with someone telling you what you believe because you think who else know better what you believe than yourself. But if I may offer some insight. If you are honest with yourself, you know that people regularly deceive themselves. It is not uncommon for us to think we believe or think one thing but then situations or practice reveal that not to be the case. The Bible teaches this to be the case with all people. The passages given above are examples of how atheist do this. They claim their is no God but then function, think, and behave in such a way that reveals that they truly know there is a God.
I have a friend that I have known since grade school and we talk regularly. He is an Atheist and I a Christian. We talked about how we share a lot of the same principles such as: laws of logic, the importance or education, the value of life, the importance or charity and so on. And yet, when I asked him for a reason for why he held to these principles he was without an answer for a solid universal truth for those principles. The reason is God is the foundation for all those things yet Atheist want to have morals, laws of logic, and so on but don’t want the God that gives those things. In so doing, they reveal that they know God and are willfully rejecting Him. They, like all people apart from the sovereign work of His grace, will continue to suppress the truth with a lie and in the end place false god in His place.
With Atheist I have found that usually they replace God with science. But though science is a wonderful gift from God to help us see “how” something happens it cannot explain “why” something happens. Because the very nature of science is observation based and though observation can answer “how” questions, science cannot answer fundamental “why” questions. I encourage you to consider the difference between “how” and “why” and see if you have not deceived yourself into thinking that all religions are equally false and that science can answer all your questions. I encourage you to seek God in the Bible and ask Him to reveal to you from His word what lies you have believed and discover how the Bible answers the “why” questions that no other book provides answers to.
