I expect most everyone knows the song by Lee Greenwood “God Bless the USA”, these are very familiar lyrics to most.
The article you are about to read might upset you, but before you become offended I’d like you to consider what I’m saying through the eyes of God. I want to explore the idea if we really should be proud to be Americans, and what does it mean to be free. I will attempt something new to my blog and it will be a two part series. I’m going to tackle freedom first.
Recently I enjoyed an article that really articulated the idea of having our minds challenged. It’s a term called Cognitive Dissonance and here is what the writer shares.
Have you ever heard the term, “cognitive dissonance”? Let me try to explain it in a few words. At a bottom – line level it means that if your worldview is challenged by information that threatens it, you will reject the information rather than let it alter or change your worldview, because of your desire for consistency, continuity, and security in your life. I want to first say I’m not anti-American. I’ve lived in this country all my life, God’s providence has placed me here, and it’s a great place to live. I have freedoms that many others don’t have but many have the freedom to be enslaved while being masked as freedom. Freedom is an interesting concept but where does it come from?
The most natural response is in the lyrics of the song.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
These are all true statements. Most Americans wouldn’t argue given what our worldview tells us about freedom, but what does it really mean to be free?
John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
What a statement! “The truth shall make you free.” The truth of abiding in God’s word, the truth of believing in Christ as the One true God sent to atone for human sin, the truth of being a disciple of the Lord. This is freedom. I believe this is as clear as it gets.
But the opposite of freedom is slavery and I want to make a point that I talked about earlier. Those that believe they are free but are enslaved.
Romans 6:16,18 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
You are either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. Either way it seems you’re a slave so how can you be a slave but still be free?
Romans 6:22-23 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
That is true freedom. The enemy tells us we somehow have freedom simply by being citizens of a country but if you are a believer true freedom only comes through Christ. The world is telling us something different, something that constantly pulls you away from freedom.
It’s the great lie that makes us believe our lives would be more satisfied if we had more…. You name it, more sex, more money, more things, the I-Phone 5 or that new Dodge Dart (that’s for my friend Steve W) Spend an hour at a shopping mall or watch a television show and tell me if what you see is true freedom. I see what the world looks to and desires and those only enslave they are far from freedom.
If you think you are free where did your freedom come from?
“Freedom is not Free” the wrath of God was poured out on His Son so I could be free. Did He die to purchase your freedom? If He did what does that do to you? If He didn’t I’d like you to consider this post and I hope God’s word challenges your mind today and brings you to repentance if you are enslaved to the hopes of the world.
John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because he has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty (freedom) to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD
